In automation technology, 3-finger grippers are of great importance due to their adaptability and precision when handling a wide variety of objects. A recent customer test examined the performance of such a gripper when picking up components from a fixture and assembling them.

Automated parts handling with igus room gantry

Pick and place applications are a central component of modern production processes, especially in automation technology. They make it possible to pick up objects precisely and place or assemble them at a defined location. This process is particularly relevant for the assembly of small, lightweight components such as plastic lids.

The test is intended to evaluate the efficiency and precision of the pick and place application when picking up and assembling plastic lids. Particular attention will be paid to the speed of the process, the error rate and integration into existing production lines.

The application consists of a pick and place robot equipped with a gripper system specially designed for plastic lids. The robotic arm is able to pick up the lids at high speed and place them on the corresponding containers by pushing the lid into the opening.

The pick and place application for picking up and fitting plastic lids shows that significant improvements in production efficiency can be achieved through the use of robotics and automation technology. The results of the customer test confirm the potential of this technology to optimize modern production processes and increase competitiveness.

The Dr. BOY GmbH & Co. KG, known for its compact and economical injection molding machines, has combined the BOY 35 E series with igus’s Low Cost Automation to enable automated parts handling. This leads to a faster return on investment for customers.

The BOY 35 E machine is particularly compact and efficient, ideal for the production of precision parts in tight tolerance ranges.A distinguishing feature of the BOY 35 E in the technical center is the integrated portal from igus, which provides simple parts handling. This portal is part of igus’s broad Low Cost Automation offering and allows customers to quickly and easily put a pick-and-place linear robot into operation for various tasks. The system is maintenance-free and can be individually assembled and programmed thanks to an online configurator.

The pneumatic pickers from BOY are replaced by the Low Cost Automation linear portals from igus, as these are more flexible and cost-efficient. The BOY 35 E with integrated Low Cost Automation from igus was first presented at fakuma 2023 and attracted great interest.

In this application, a pick-and-place solution was tested for a customer using an igus linear robot, a camera, and a conveyor belt. The individual components had to communicate seamlessly to ensure the metal part could be reliably picked up from the conveyor belt and accurately sorted. The integration of the camera for detecting and positioning the metal part, along with the precise control of the linear robot, played a crucial role in ensuring the system’s high reliability and efficiency.
